Prof Erik Hohmann

Orthopaedic Surgery

Prof Erik Hohmann is a German and South African educated and trained Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon. Following specialist training with the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa) he completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine with Prof Andreas Imhoff (Munich/Germany). He holds a PhD in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and a higher academic medical doctorate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Biomechanics. He is board certified in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery and Sportsmedicine and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow [FRCS, FCRS (Tr&Orth)].

Previously, Prof Erik has worked as a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery for the University of Queensland, Australia and as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon for Queensland Health with a focus on arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine and complex knee and shoulder reconstructions and orthopaedic trauma. Currently he is a Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Pretoria, South Africa. He works as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery in Dubai. He is also a registered (General Civil Aviation Authority – GCAA) aviation medical specialist. In 2023 he was awarded honorary membership of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine

He has served as an editor of the Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Research (Editor in Chief James Lubowitz) for 9 years and was an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sports for the past 12 years. He still serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Arthroscopy and the review board of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (JAOOS).

He has published over 200 journal articles, 10 book chapters and 5 books in the field of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. Over the last 23 years he has been a team physician for various professional and semiprofessional sporting teams and individual athletes.
